Enemies are extremely aggressive, so it's impossible to completely lean on hardening, but I like it as a stylish, expressive wrinkle to a familiar combat style. The cooldown timer is pretty generous too, only taking a few seconds to refill. If I commit to an attack with garbage timing right as an enemy is about to hit me-Mortal Shell's attack animations are slow and heavy, like playing a Dark Souls strength build by default-then I can temporarily harden to stop my animation, absorb the attack, and then resume the attack immediately.įixing oopsies feels great and looks cool, imbuing fights with strange rhythms and imposing energy as weapons glint off my rocky carapace and brigands wheel backwards in surprise. I see a big attack incoming that I'm not prepared to dodge or parry and I might harden to block the attack and avoid taking damage. It essentially functions as a tanking button. Standing still, in the middle of your own attack animation-doesn't matter. Press a button and you can turn to stone at literally any moment to absorb and stun an incoming enemy attack. It's all pretty standard third-person melee stuff so far, but the harden ability makes things truly interesting. You can parry some attacks and, by expending energy you build from fighting aggressively, you can follow a parry with a critical attack that does major damage and gives you back some health. Circle-strafe enemies with a generous lock on, study their attack animations, and maneuver around them, getting hits in when safe. Subsequent uses often unlock bonuses, too.Ĭombat works as you'd expect, from the start at least. You’ll need two segments of Resolve to perform this attack.To find out what an item does at all, you'll need to use it first. The Mechanical Spike adds a spear attack - with a period of invulnerability during the animation - to your Hallowed Sword. You can actually grab it during the fight, and use it to upgrade the sword before you return to claim your Shell. That item is an upgrade for the Hallowed Sword. That chest in the middle of Grisha’s lair contains the Mechanical Spike. Once your Harden ability resets, repeat the process.Īs you get more confident, you can mix in running jump attacks (sprint and then heavy attack) to deal a little extra damage, but it’s entirely possible to win the fight with only this one move. At that point, you’re back to kiting them around. If you want even more distance, you can throw in a second dodge while backing away to turn it into a roll. Limiting your swings will ensure that you never run out of stamina, and you’ll need it to dodge. With their second swing out of the way, light attack Grisha two more times, and then dodge backward.ĭon’t swing more than twice even if you think you have time. Right after that, you’ll finish your swing, and the momentum will carry you out of the way of Grisha’s second attack. Grisha’s first hit will knock you out of Harden. When you’re ready, step toward Grisha, start a regular swing, and Harden immediately. Grisha won’t attack until you’re pretty close, so you’re in control here. Once Grisha’s attention is on you, start kiting them backward and around the arena. The video above shows the only move you need to win this fight. By keeping distant, and kiting them around the arena, you’ll only ever need to see one move. The key to this fight, especially early on while you’re still learning, is to understand how much control you really have over Grisha’s actions. Grisha has a few attacks, and all of them are devastating. We talked about both of these in our combat basics guide, but this fight puts them into practice. There are really only two things you need to do to win this fight: walk backward, and Harden mid-swing. Just make sure you avoid the bear traps at the entrance of the tunnel.
